Pomba Branca is a community of people working voluntarily, compassionately, and with commitment to provide practical and emotional support through grief and at the end of life, guided by the belief that “we can help one another.”
Who We Are
We do not replace existing health, social, or religious services. We offer complementary support: time, presence, comfort, and compassion for people facing the end of life.
We can also help people navigate the maze of questions, organisations, and needs that often arise during this period.
We are open to everyone, with an open mind and a kind heart, offering the respect and dignity these difficult moments require.
How We Started
Carla Cavaco, from Tavira, returned home after the death of her Dutch husband at the age of 52. His end-of-life journey was very short: only one month from diagnosis to his final breath. Although Carla had the support of her family, when she looked for grief support in Tavira she could not find any. That was the beginning of the idea for the Cafés da Saudade.
Carla’s husband had a very dignified death, and she felt called to help others have a dignified end of life. That is why Pomba Branca was created.
What We Do
We serve the community while also offering each person a chance to take part and contribute in the way they can.
By helping one another, we build a community system for facing the challenges of end of life and grief.
